Hard to believe 2017 is around the corner. Another year done and dusted, another year of amazing beauty discoveries – and I couldn’t keep them all to myself! I always look forward to summing up of what I’ve loved the most throughout the year, and if I can do one last bit of enabling and recommend some ace products, then I’m all for it. Before we begin I thought I’d clarify that these aren’t all products released in 2016, just products that I purchased/gave more love to in the year. Now let’s get into it – grab a cuppa, it’s a long one!
Before I begin, last year my blogging friend Sorren from Beauty In Bold and I shared each other’s posts, so this year we’re doing the same. Make sure to check out her recommendations, as you’re bound to find some fantastic products. I love Sorren’s honesty when it comes to reviews, so don’t miss it! For her faves of the year, click here. Also, make sure to give her a follow on Instagram for some drool-worthy shots and super fun makeup videos!
Most days I reach for a lightweight medium base – something that evens out my skin tone and makes me look put together. This year I purchased the Urban Decay Naked Skin One & Done Hybrid Complexion Perfector on a whim and boy, oh boy – it sure gave my all-time favourite It Cosmetics CC cream a run for its money! I do mix One & Done and the It Cosmetics CC Cream from time to time, but One & Done is just amazing on its own. The best part is it has an SPF 30 and it lasts all day.
Sometimes I like to be fashionably late to bandwagons, and this was the case with the NARS Sheer Glow Foundation. This is my favourite foundation for a perfected finish as it builds up from a medium to full coverage so easily. It photographs amazingly and is a pretty good match for my olive skin tone – I wear the shade Stromboli.
Another foundation that looks equally as amazing in photos is the Hourglass Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation (review here). This is one expensive foundation stick, but a little goes a long way! It provides medium to full coverage with a flawless satin finish but feels like nothing on the skin. If you’re looking for a foundation stick, this is definitely one to try.
Primer & Setting Powders
To prep my skin for foundation, I can’t go past the Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer. This stuff is so good – a cult favourite for a reason! It makes my skin feel super soft and slightly blurs imperfections. It’s great for combination and oily skin types as it helps keep the oils in check. This is now my third empty travel size tube and it’s probably about time I invest in a full sized bottle!
I was looking to try a loose setting powder, and I decided to go for newcomer Kat Von D Lock-It Translucent Powder. This powder sets foundation and concealer beautifully! It really melts into the skin leaving a velvety-matte finish, whilst blurring pores, imperfections and fine lines. If you hate powders that look cakey, powdery or feel heavy, then you will love this as it is the complete opposite.
The BECCA Cosmetics Multi-Tasking Perfecting Powder* was a late arrival in 2016, but it quickly became a go-to in my everyday makeup bag. I’ve recently posted a full review on this (here), so I won’t carry on. It’s fab, it’s multi-purpose and I love it as foundation or as a setting powder all the same.
Will you look at that #panporn?! Evidently, the Tarte Colored Clay CC Under Eye Corrector gets a lot of love. This instantly cancels out any darkness like an absolute boss; most times I use this I forgo any concealer. It’s creamy enough that you can easily pat it away with your finger, yet not too creamy it becomes a creasy mess. In fact, I don’t even set this sometimes and it still looks great.
In September, a new concealer hit the MissNewBeauty desk – the BECCA Aqua Luminous Perfecting Concealer* (review here), and I’ve been completely hooked since. These are lightweight, hydrating and provide just the right touch of coverage for those who like a lighter finish. What I love the most about this concealer is that it really becomes undetectable on the skin, and it’s perfect for those who have dehydrated skin. I use the shade Light for my under-eye area, and Medium and Beige for spot concealing.
Bronzing & Contouring
I’ve had these two beautiful palettes for what feels like a long time! I’m sure you’ve seen them all over Instagram and I’m here to tell you they’re worth the hype. First we have the Kat Von D Shade & Light Palette, which I use almost everyday. I once made a bold statement by saying this is “the only contouring palette you will ever need”, and I fully stand by that (review here). Lyric (the top middle shade) is the best brightening banana powder I’ve ever used. I also love combining the middle and left bottom shades to add definition and warmth to the cheekbones. Ah-mazing.
The best contouring shade for medium skin tones is encased in the Marc Jacobs InstaMarc Light Filtering Contour Palette in Mirage Filter (review here). It has the perfect amount of grey undertones to mimic a shadow without looking too ashy. I find it blends seamlessly – it just melts into the skin and gives me the best definition.
If you follow me on Instagram, then you’ve probably seen these cheek products a few times. One of my most reached for blushes for the year is the Antonym Cosmetics Organic Blush in Peach. No one talks about this brand… why?! This is the prettiest shade of peach ever! The marbled powder is made up of two different peachy tones, plus a very soft champagne shade, providing a gorgeous luminous finish on the cheeks.
The Marc Jacobs Beauty Air Blush Soft Glow Duo is arguably one of the most popular blush releases of the year. In true Daniela form, I had to pick up the neutral shade of the bunch – 506 Flesh & Fantasy, which is a mixture of a satin warm nude and a champagne shimmer. It’s crazy – this blush is so pigmented but buildable, and adds life to the cheeks in a subtle way. The texture is silky smooth to the touch and it practically blends it self. Love.
For my glowing skin needs, I couldn’t put down the BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector Poured* in the shade Opal. If you’re into a subtle glow, and/or have oily skin, you will love this. It adds a beautiful but subtle glow with a powder finish – a matte highlight, if you will. I love that it’s day time appropriate when worn alone, but can also be layered with a powder highlight for night wear.
One of the most exciting lipstick launches was the Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Lipsticks (amuse bouche means mouth-amuser in french, cute huh?), and the warm nude shade Honeycomb had to be mine. This satin-finish lipstick is super opaque, creamy and doesn’t tug the lips, making it one of my favourite nudes this year.
My favourite liquid lipstick was the BareMinerals Gen Nude Matte Liquid Lip Colour in the shade Om. It has a cream-to-matte mousse-like texture and feels very comfortable on the lips – it’s a good one for those of you who can’t bear the dryness of matte liquid lipsticks. No prunes for lips here! I can’t wait for these to launch in Australia so I can try out a few more shades.
I think I’ve found my HG lip liner – the Marc Jacobs Beauty (P)out Liner Lip Pencil in 300 Nude(ist). Described as a cafe au lait, this lip liner matches my natural lip colour perfectly and it goes with every nude lipstick I own. It’s a unique gel formula that glides onto the lips with the utmost ease – there is no lip liner like it. It’s so comfortable I often wear it alone all over.
In the lip balm department, the Dior Addict Lip Maximiser High Volume Lip Plumper became a loyal purse companion. It plumps the lips nicely and smooths out any lines. It’s hydrating, non-sticky and makes my lips super soft.
Shock horror – I didn’t give eyeshadows a lot of love this year. It was all about
laziness practicality, so I depended on my trusty Bobbi Brown Long Wear Cream Shadow Stick in Taupe. So easy to quickly blend away with your finger and it stays put! Plus, this shade is one of those magical warm browns that adds definition and depth to the lids making it look like you put a lot more effort in. No one will know any different! *winky face*
2016 was the year of Skinstitut! It’s a fantastic Australian skin care brand that really delivers results. The Gentle Cleanser* does a great job at cleansing and removing makeup without stripping the skin. The Glycolic Scrub* is one of the best exfoliators I’ve ever used (I’m on my second bottle). It has helped improve my skin’s texture, has made it appear brighter and less dull, and has banished my flaky dry patches. And as for one of my favourite moisturisers ever (also on my second bottle!), the Moisture Defence Moisturiser* takes the cake. It’s very lightweight on the skin, but at the same time it’s extremely hydrating and nourishing. Highly recommend!
Paco Rabanne Olympēa is undoubtedly one of my most used perfumes this year… I can’t go past it – it’s delicious! Olympēa is described as a modern oriental, with its top notes being green mandarine, water jasmine and ginger flower; its middle note being salted vanilla; and its base notes being sandalwood and ambergris. I can’t resist anything with vanilla in it as it is, but this is so unique due to the saltiness of the fragrance.
Dior Poison Girl is a recent addition to my perfume collection, but I am hooked! Poison Girl is the perfect cross between gourmand and oriental. Top notes are bitter orange and lemon; middle notes are rose and orange blossom; and base notes are vanilla, tonka bean and almond. It smells like a mix of two of my other favourites – Lancôme La Vie Est Belle and YSL Black Opium. Amazing.
