Kat Von D Lock-It Concealer Crème & Setting Powder Review

True: The beauty world goes into a frenzy when Kat Von D Beauty releases hot new products. In the past year, however, there have only been two products that really caught my eye. New liquid lipstick shade? I’m so over the matte liquid lipstick trend. Super colourful eyeshadow palette? Not my cup of tea. New concealer and setting powder? Yes, come to mama! Those are two items I am always willing to try. Enter the Kat Von D Lock-It Concealer Crème & Setting Powder. One I’m in love with, the other didn’t exceed my expectations.

Let’s start with the Kat Von D Lock-It Concealer Crème. The brand describes this to be la crème de la crème of concealers; that is – it’s said to brighten the undereye area, cover blemishes, correct discoloration, contour, and highlight. If that isn’t enough, the rich and creamy formula is also said to last 24 hours (because, you know, we all need such longevity from our makeup). The shade range in this line is one of the most extensive out there, consisting of an impressive 20 shades, plus the very popular white concealer shade. As I wanted to use this as an under-eye highlighting concealer, I decided on the shade L15 Neutral.

I have to say it wasn’t love at first try. The texture is quite rich but not as creamy as I would like (it’s drier than the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer). Once applied, it sets very quickly so you have to work fast to ensure it blends seamlessly. It doesn’t seem to mesh and become one with the skin, rather it sits on top making the under-eye area look unnatural. To help this, I like to use a damp beauty sponge which pushes the product into the skin.

The coverage just completely confuses me! Swatched on the back of my hand, I would definitely describe this as a full-coverage concealer; however, when applied to my under-eye area, it seems to sheer out and doesn’t completely conceal the darkness around my eyes. Once it sets, the finish is completely matte and can look dry  so I wouldn’t recommend this to someone who has extremely dehydrated skin. Does it crease? Well, most concealers do – the joy of having fine lines! But it didn’t crease excessively.

My favourite part about the Lock-It Concealer Crème is the wand. The shape of the applicator is fabulous as it allows you to tailor your application. The flat end lets you cover large areas, while the sharp tip comes in handy for more precise applications.

Given the coverage and the lasting finish of this concealer, I think it might be better for covering up blemishes. It does last well on the skin and the colour range is unbeatable. The Lock-It Concealer Crème definitely has potential (plus billions of amazing reviews from other bloggers) and I certainly won’t let it gather dust; but I  have other concealers in my arsenal that I much prefer, like the Becca Aqua Luminous Concealer (review here) or the Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Concealer.

Onto the product that I truly love – the Kat Von D Lock-It Setting Powder. I tend to stay away from loose powders as they can get messy and the packaging is bulky, but something made me want to get this and I don’t regret it. It is so finely milled – by far the softest powder I have felt in my life! Did I mention the sifter comes in the shape of a star? How very Kat Von D.

The shade is described as translucent, however it does have a yellow undertone to it. Although I don’t notice it leaving a cast or changing the colour of my foundation, darker skin tones might find this a bit ashy. Up close the powder has micro-shimmers that aren’t visible once applied to the skin.

This powder sets foundation and concealer beautifully! It really melts into the skin leaving a velvety-matte finish, whilst blurring pores, imperfections and fine lines. If you hate powders that look cakey, powdery or feel heavy, then you will love this as it is the complete opposite. If you like to bake, the Kat Von D Lock-It Setting Powder also performs well in this capacity.

I’ve tried this powder with multiple base products including concealers, and it has extended the wear and kept my combination skin matte for longer. I’m unsure if super oily skin types would enjoy this powder, so if any of you with this skin type have tried it, do let me know!

Without a doubt, the Lock-It Setting Powder is one of the best I’ve ever used.

Have you tried these? What’s your favourite Kat Von D product? I’d also love to know your current fave setting powder, do let me know!

I haven’t tried the powder setting powder so I’ve been meaning to read and find out more about it! I was genuinely worried that the one-shade-fits-all might result in discoloration but I think I’ll give it a try!

I really love the love concealer, its actually quickly become one of my favourites. How amazing does the setting powder sound though. I must get my hands on it. I recently picked up the RCMA no colour powder which I’m really enjoy. But you’ve completely sold the Kat Von D one to me :) xx

The Lock It Concealer surprisingly works really well for me and I have a problem with dry under eyes. I make sure my under eye area is moisturized before application and I use her concealer brush for blending and I get full coverage. Using a Beauty Blender is nice but I find that sometimes it soaks up a lot of the product and you don’t get the coverage that you want. That’s why I prefer it for foundations but not so much for concealers.

I am a major concealer junkie, so this looks awesome to me already!

Great review! That’s too bad about the concealer though. I would of thought that the concealer would be too thick to go under the eyes, but it’s the complete opposite? Anyways, I would love to try the setting powder. It sounds amazing!

I’ve never tried Kat von D products as they are not available here in Italy and I don’t know where to find them online. Maybe because I’m not so attracted by this brand and I don’t know why :) have a lovely day xx

I had high hopes for this concealer, so It sucks that it didn’t work out for you! I may have to pick up a sample of that Translucent powder when I am in Sephora. As a darker skin tone, I have a constant fear of powders making me look ashy or dry under the eye.

    Great post,

How random that the concealer is different under the eyes. I hate concealers that sheer out too much under the eyes as it’s the only place I even use concealer!

The powder looks awesome, I agree, I am not such a loose powder user, I find it very messy. The only one I have is an Estée Lauder one which was discontinued and is in the shade “transleucent” but the actual powder is a light brown which confuses me!

I love loose powders, so this looks right up my street! x

So interesting you say that because every post loves the lock it concealer creme, but doesn’t like the powder because they feel like it just sits on top of the skin. I personally have been hesitant to try KVD face makeup just because of how full coverage it is. And like you I prefer my UD concealer much better!

Oh man, I was SO close to adding the KVD Powder to my Sephora order after reading your favourites but decided I probably couldn’t justify any more loose powder products – I love the RCMA No Color Powder far too much! It is most definitely still on my wishlist though, it looks so incredible! The concealer’s applicator looks really good but if it’s even the teeniest bit drying, it won’t be a pretty sight on my under eyes! Great review, as always! xx
