We’ve all seen those fun un-boxing YouTube videos of monthly subscription boxes; they’re supposed to be great value and a great way of trying new products. It all sounded great; but in Australia, thus far, I hadn’t seen any subscription services that caught my eye or that were worth the money… until I saw marie claire’s The Parcel all over Instagram late last year. The product selection looked amazing, and the price is right.
The Autumn Edit is my first box from The Parcel. You can sign up for the one box ($29.95), a seasonal subscription ($25), or an annual subscription ($90). Each box is delivered quarterly. During Christmas, they had a special where you could get 5 boxes when purchasing the annual subscription, and I signed up for that one – who doesn’t want an extra box of goodies?! Ok, now that all the boring details are out of the way, let’s see what I got.
MOR Emporium Classics Snow Gardenia Triple-Milled Soap
Sample size, $19.95
I could smell this before I even opened the box – it is such a strong scent! I am not really sure if many people use solid soaps anymore (liquid soaps for the win). Also, if you’re prone to scent-related head aches, then this one may gather dust in the back of your cupboard. Non-the-less, I’ve never tried anything from MOR, so I will most likely give it a go… when I run out of my liquid soap.
Lancome Advanced Genifique Youth Activating Concentrate
Sample size 7ml, $95
One of the most high-end products received in this edit, and a good one at that; as it’s not something I’d personally be likely to try (let alone purchase) if it wasn’t included in this box. It’s said to “reactivate youthful looking skin”. I am soon to run out of my beloved Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair, so I will definitely incorporate this into my routine and test it out then.
L’Occitane Dry Skin Hand Cream in Shea Butter, Zesty Lime, Vanilla Bouquet or Rose Heart
Full size 30ml, $13
When I saw that a L’Occitane hand cream was included on everyone’s Instagram pics, I was so so pleased. I’ve gone through 8 or so of these mini hand creams through the years, plus a couple of the full size shea butter hand cream tubes. What can I say… I LOVE hand cream. And this one is one of the best I’ve ever tried. It is super moisturising but also fast-absorbing. I got Zesty Lime, but I wish I got Vanilla Bouquet because I love vanilla errthing. This one went straight into the handbag. I noted it as full size, because L’Occitane sell these in two sizes, 30ml and 150ml; so technically, this isn’t really a “sample” size.
Rimmel BB Cream Radiance in Medium
Full size, $12.95
This arrived before it hit the shops as an exclusive preview. I am a sucker for a good BB cream for every day use. Light to medium luminous coverage is my jam, and I’ve tried many in the last few years, but never a Rimmel one. I have only used this twice (I finally opened it yesterday), but so far I really like it. Let me know if you would like a review!
Max Factor Masterpiece Transform Mascara in Black
Full size, $23.95
Max Factor is a brand I have never tried… weird, right? Maybe. Call me crazy but it’s quite expensive, and not many of their products caught my attention enough to shell out the cash. However, I love trying out new mascaras, and the short bristles in this wand look quite interesting; can’t wait to see what it does for my lashes – I will report back.
Garnier Skin Naturals Miracle Skin Cream
Full size, $19.95
One of the products I was most excited to try, except I had bought it at the Priceline skincare sale a few months back. I haven’t even tried it yet, but I had picked it up because Anna from Vivianna Does Makeup referred to this as an inexpensive dupe for Origins VitaZing (which I owned and loved). It’ll be a great, nourishing product for the colder months, whether worn under foundation or alone.
Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes
Full size, $3.99
This didn’t get me excited… at all. I don’t own makeup removing wipes because I haven’t tried any I liked. I am happy with the dynamic duo of my Garnier Micellar Water and my Clarisonic. I might try these when I travel and need something quick.
Schick Hydro Silk Razor
Who cares about hair removal when the temperature drops?! Ok, maybe I do… because I live in North QLD. BUT I feel this was a random product to include. Useful, I will give them that.
Something to consider: When it comes to base products (or makeup in general), you may not get a shade that matches you or suits you. You do create a profile where you list your skin tone and type, amongst other things; but even so, I’ve seen a lot of girls got the Rimmel BB cream in Medium, when their profile says Fair/Light. There is a Facebook group called ‘The Parcel by marie claire and Girlfriend Swap, Sell and Chat’ where you may be able to swap your shade with someone else.
I am very impressed with my first The Parcel and I cannot wait until the Winter Edition. Sure, a little more diversity would’ve been nice, i.e. instead of having two base products, they could have included something else. Would I recommend it to others? Absolutely. It’s so worth it for eight products, five of which are full size, and they are a nice mix of high end and ‘drugstore’. Plus, the combined value of these products is well over $100. I really hope The Parcel will keep up its standards as they release more edits.
